
Underwater photography becomes much easier once you stop treating every disappointing image as a camera problem. Water changes the light before it reaches your subject and again before it reaches your lens. The greater that distance, the more color, contrast and detail you lose.
The good news is that a few decisions make an immediate difference. These underwater photography tips apply whether you use a compact camera, an action camera or a larger camera in a housing. The controls may differ, but the principles remain the same: reduce the amount of water between you and the subject, use the available light deliberately and give the camera a stable, clearly composed scene to capture.
1. Get Close—Then Get Closer
The single most useful thing you can do underwater is move closer to your subject. Water absorbs color and scatters light, so every extra metre between the camera and the subject makes the image look softer, flatter and less colorful.
Using the zoom does not solve this. The subject may appear larger in the frame, but you are still photographing it through the same amount of water. Moving physically closer reduces that water and gives you a cleaner file with more natural detail to work with later.
Try to fill more of the frame in the camera instead of relying on a heavy crop. Approach slowly, stop before the animal changes its behaviour and never touch or chase marine life for a photograph. Getting close works best when the subject is comfortable enough to remain where it is.

2. Control Your Buoyancy and Move Slowly
A stable photographer has a much better chance of capturing a sharp photograph. If you are constantly rising, sinking or correcting your position with your fins, it becomes difficult to hold the camera steady, maintain focus and refine the composition.
Good buoyancy also prevents you from stirring up sand that can cloud the scene and create backscatter. Before bringing a camera on a demanding dive, make sure you can control your position without using the reef or seabed for support. If you are snorkeling, the same principle applies: relax, use slow movements and settle into position before raising the camera.
The camera should never take your attention away from your depth, gas supply, buddy or surroundings. If managing both the dive and the camera feels overwhelming, practise the dive skills first. Better control is good for your photographs, your safety and the environment around you.
3. Set Up Your Camera Before Entering the Water
Small setup problems become surprisingly difficult to fix once the camera is sealed inside a housing. Check the battery, memory card, image format, focus mode and starting exposure settings while you are still somewhere dry.
Inspect and close the housing according to its manufacturer's instructions, then take a test photograph with the camera inside it. Confirm that the shutter, main controls and any flash or strobe connection work as expected. It is much better to discover a forgotten memory card or inaccessible setting before the dive.
If your camera supports RAW, select it before entering the water. A RAW file retains much more flexibility for correcting white balance, exposure and color later. JPEG can still produce good results, but it gives you less room to recover a photograph taken in difficult light.
4. Choose Your Light Based on Depth and Distance
Natural light can work beautifully in clear, shallow water. The closer you are to the surface, the more light and warm color remain available. Pay attention to the direction of the sun and position yourself so it helps define the subject rather than leaving it in a dull shadow.
As you go deeper, natural light becomes weaker and increasingly blue or green. An underwater strobe or flash can restore warm light, but only over a limited distance. It can illuminate a nearby fish or coral formation; it cannot light an entire reef several metres away.
Decide which light is doing which job. With a strobe, the artificial light normally exposes the nearby subject while ambient light determines how bright or dark the surrounding water appears. Without a strobe, work with the available light, stay relatively shallow when possible and accept that the scene should still look as though it was photographed underwater.
5. Position Your Strobe Away from the Lens
Backscatter appears when light reflects from suspended particles directly back into the camera. A built-in flash sits very close to the lens and lights the water in front of it head-on, which is why it can produce a field of bright specks even when the water looked clear to you.
If you use an external strobe, move it away from the housing and angle it so that only the edge of the beam reaches the subject. The aim is to light the subject without illuminating all the water between the lens and the subject. Moving closer helps here as well because there are fewer particles in the shorter water column.


There is no single strobe position that works at every distance. Watch the edges of the frame, adjust the angle when you change subjects and take a test shot when conditions allow. 6. Get Low and Shoot Slightly Upward
Shooting down at a fish is often convenient, but it usually places the subject against a busy reef or seabed with very little separation. Lowering the camera to the subject's level—and often pointing it slightly upward—can create a much cleaner image.
An upward angle may place blue water or the brighter surface behind the subject. This gives its outline more contrast, adds a sense of depth and shows the animal from a more natural perspective. It can also bring sun rays or a diver into the background when they genuinely improve the composition.
Watch the brightest parts of the surface carefully. If they lose all detail, reduce the ambient exposure or change your angle. The aim is not to shoot upward automatically, but to choose the background that separates the subject most effectively.

7. Find the Background Before Taking the Photograph
It is easy to become so focused on an interesting animal that you stop looking at everything around it. A branch of coral cutting through the subject, another diver at the edge of the frame or a bright patch of sand can pull attention away from the photograph's main point.
Before pressing the shutter, scan the full frame. Sometimes moving a few centimetres left, right, higher or lower is enough to replace a cluttered background with open water. Look for contrast between the subject and its surroundings, and leave space in front of an animal when it is clearly moving in one direction.
Also try both horizontal and vertical compositions when the subject gives you time. A reef wall, turtle or upright diver may fit a vertical frame much better than the horizontal orientation we tend to use by habit.
8. Focus on the Eye and Anticipate Movement
With marine life, the visible eye is usually the most important point of focus. If the eye is sharp, the photograph can still feel convincing when parts of the body fall outside the depth of field. If the eye is soft, the entire image often appears out of focus.
Use continuous autofocus or subject tracking for animals moving steadily through the frame if your camera handles it reliably. For a static macro subject, a single, carefully placed focus point may be easier to control. No autofocus mode is best in every situation, so learn how your camera behaves before the dive.
Rather than chasing the subject and pressing the shutter continuously, watch it for a moment. Fish often repeat a route, return to the same coral head or turn in a recognisable pattern. Anticipating that movement lets you choose the background, position the focus point and capture a short sequence at the right moment.
9. Choose Settings for the Problem You Need to Solve
There is no universal set of underwater camera settings. A fast-moving fish in dark water creates a different problem from a stationary nudibranch lit by a strobe. Instead of memorising one combination, understand which setting addresses the problem you can see.
Shutter speed controls movement
If the subject or camera movement is causing blur, increase the shutter speed. A relatively still subject may be sharp around 1/125 second when you are stable, while a fast fish may need 1/250 second or faster. Treat those values as starting points rather than rules. When using a strobe, stay within your camera's flash-sync limit.
Aperture controls depth of field
A wider aperture lets in more light but produces less depth of field, making accurate focus more important. A smaller aperture keeps more of the subject sharp but requires more light, a higher ISO or stronger strobe output. With strobes, aperture and strobe power both have a strong effect on the brightness of the nearby subject.
ISO provides another way to gain exposure
Use a lower ISO when there is enough light, but do not protect a low ISO at the expense of a blurred photograph. Modern cameras can often tolerate a moderate ISO increase surprisingly well, and some noise is usually easier to manage than lost detail caused by subject movement.
Change one setting for a clear reason, take another photograph and check whether the problem improved. This is far more reliable than changing shutter speed, aperture and ISO together without knowing which adjustment helped.
10. Match White Balance to Your Light Source
White balance should reflect the light that actually illuminates the subject. When a nearby subject is lit mainly by a strobe, Auto or a neutral daylight-style setting is often a sensible starting point. A strong underwater white balance setting combined with strobe light can make the subject look excessively red or orange.

When shooting with ambient light, a custom white balance or the camera's underwater mode can help compensate for the blue or green cast, particularly in shallower water. Recalibrate a custom white balance when your depth or lighting changes significantly.
White balance cannot fully replace wavelengths of light that no longer reach a subject at depth. That is why distance, depth and artificial light still matter. RAW files give you much more control afterward, but the most believable result is not always perfectly neutral or intensely blue. 11. Review Sharpness and Exposure Underwater
A photograph can look bright and sharp on the small rear screen while hiding clipped highlights, motion blur or missed focus. Screen brightness also appears different in dark water than it does at the surface, so do not use the preview alone to judge exposure.
Check the histogram or highlight warning if your camera provides one. Zoom in on an important image to confirm that the eye or key detail is actually sharp. You do not need to inspect every frame, but checking after the first few photographs of a new subject or lighting setup can prevent an entire dive's images from sharing the same mistake.
12. Shoot RAW and Edit with Restraint
Even a well-exposed underwater photograph will often benefit from editing. A careful adjustment to white balance, exposure, contrast and local detail can bring the image closer to what the scene felt like without making it look unnatural.
Start by correcting the largest problem rather than increasing every slider. Restore the basic color balance, set the overall exposure and then decide whether the subject or water needs a separate local adjustment. Strong saturation, excessive Dehaze and aggressive sharpening can create brittle detail, strange water color and visible noise.
Editing has limits. It cannot restore critical focus, remove severe motion blur or recreate detail lost by photographing through too much water. The biggest improvements in underwater photography rarely come from changing cameras. Get comfortable in the water, move closer, pay attention to the direction of the light and check the whole frame before taking the photograph.
